THE Beruang Blazers general manager Wira Pori has urged his side to focus on their season opener against Labuan Wasps in the upcoming second Yuwang EBL (East Malaysia Basketball League) Basketball League next Friday. 'We had good tune-up games in the SpeedSend Cup (also known as The Sultan Cup) - which we won - but that does not mean the team should be complacent in our matches in EBL,' said Wira at a press conference last night at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) Court in Batu Bersurat. 'We will be playing the very first match, so there will be pressure for us to perform hopefully we will do well. I can honestly say that all the teams in the league are to watch out for so we hope we can make a good challenge. 'Lyndon (Gudez) has been around for the last three Sultan Cup tournaments so he will be a good addition to the line-up as well as Goh and Escosio. 'What we were lacking with our local teams was the physical aspect. So we hope the addition of three players will help us balance the team. 'We have a good chemistry going on with the current team and we will be starting our training sessions soon with the new imports to get everyone on the same page,' he concluded. The sultanate's only semi-professional basketball team have confirmed their final line-up last week with the signing of Filipino Lyndon Gudez as their first Southeast Asian (SEA) import. It was followed by the signing of Singaporean Delvin Goh and Filipino Hernal 'Wowie' Escosio. Each participating team will be allowed to have three SEA imports but only two are allowed on the court at any time. The Beruang Blazers have a total of 15 players with three reserves to be rotated every game or for any possible injury or unavailability. The local players in the line-up are Md Zainul Ashyraf Hj Hussin, Ben Sim, Yap Chun Ping, Choo Yung Jian, Alvin Goh, Darren Chai, Ahmad Termizi Nordeen, Lim Liang Wei, Soon Kiang Leong, Khoo Chin Kai, Leong Ming Seng and Jamri Ramlee. Reigning champions Kuching Lord Tiger, Labuan Wasps and Kota Kinabalu Eagle are the three other teams who will vie for top honours at the tournament. Kuching Lord Tiger clinched the title in the first season after beating Labuan Wasps 86-64 in the final at the MBKS Indoor Stadium in Kuching. The semi-professional league will be contested over four legs in a round-robin format with the first in Kuching on August 26 to September 25.
