D'Sunlit: Gudez just too good - Jul 26, 2016

D'SUNLIT coach Allan Talanay felt they simply had no answer to Lyndon Gudez in Sunday's SpeedSend Cup final. The Filipino import stole the show with 47 points to help Easyway defend their title - their fourth in six years - after an 89-72 victory at the Brunei Basketball Association court in Batu Bersurat. Gudez, who will be one of the three Southeast Asian imports lacing up for local semi-professional team Beruang Blazers in the upcoming Yuwang EBL League, nailed 10 three-pointers and claimed that his shots were 'lucky' in a post-match interview. Indeed, he was unstoppable at times. Gudez put on a shooting clinic, and with 23 of those points coming in the second period, allowed Easyway to extend their cushion to 54-36 at half-time en route to victory. Talanay tried to play a few formations from the play book but just couldn't get his players to weather the storm. 'We had a few timeouts to adjust our play but he (Gudez) had hot hands for the whole game. No one could stop him,' Talanay told The Brunei Times after the loss. 'He was making plays and scoring whenever (he wanted). Their big guys also stepped up in the game and played well,' he added. D'Sunlit had to play a difficult semi-final against Juramas on Saturday night, eventually beating them 108-105 in double overtime. Easyway had a much easier affair in their last-four tie when they went past Street Roc 94-65 - and they were fresher for the championship match. Easyway eventually outhustled D'Sunlit to almost every loose ball and dominated the boards in the encounter. Regardless, Talanay felt that fatigue was no excuse and gave credit to Easyway for the victory. 'Basically our guys were pretty tired from the last game which went to double overtime,' said Talanay. 'It was a big factor as the guys could only rest for a few hours... But that is no excuse. 'We should have started out strong, but in the end we came out short. 'Easyway are a great team. They did a good job in rotating their deep bench and they really stepped up. 'I still have to give credit and take my hat off to our guys for their hard work. 'Playing together as a team was the most important, and hopefully we will meet again next year,' concluded Talanay. Meanwhile, the Mum Bakery Cup which was initially scheduled to tip off in the first week of August has been postponed until further notice.
