EASYWAY made it three wins in as many SpeedSend Cup games after easing past Hainan 108-57 on Thursday night. It was the third straight blowout victory for Easyway despite having only eight players to start the Group B match. They had distributed scoring with five players getting into double figures in the victory at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) court in Batu Bersurat. Geve Leones produced a game-high of 25 points while Lyndon Gudez poured in 24 points. Cameroonian import Landry Sanjo contributed 19 points while the duo of Ben Sim and Francis Barcellano added 15 and 11 points respectively. On the other hand, Filipino imports - Mark Cailao and Kiervin Revadavia - led Hainan in the scoring department. The former notched 19 points while Revadavia, who played the whole 40 minutes, scored 17 points in a losing effort. Hainan only managed their first field goal after more than three minutes into the opening period to bring the scores to 14-4. It was one-way traffic throughout and it was evident where the match was heading with Easyway leading 29-6 heading into the second quarter. Easyway manager Wira Pori felt that it was a good test of character for his charges despite the lopsided scoreline. 'We started with only eight players before Zul (Faizuladzmi Tajuddin) arrived in the fourth quarter,' said Wira in an interview with The Brunei Times after the triumph. 'It presents a different test as we are forced to be creative with the rotation just like being in foul trouble. 'We were also frustrated and buying into our opponents' cat calls. But we are proud of the players as they showed grit and character and we want to carry that over to future games,' he added. When asked if it might be a problem having not been tested after three games, Wira replied: 'It presents a problem because difficulties have to be experienced to test your mettle.' Easyway next face Propel, who are made up of the national cagers preparing for the Borneo Cup next week, at 9pm tomorrow - and Wira is looking forward to the encounter. 'I have always been supportive of the national team programme and having to face them will benefit both sides as they prepare for the Borneo Cup and us for the EBL League,' said Wira. Easyway have several of their players lacing up for the Beruang Blazers which start their campaign in the Yuwang EBL League - a semi-professional basketball competition in East Malaysia - next month. Thursday's other game saw Baotime clinch their second win in the same group after a 101-80 victory over Rotary. The competition continues today with Rakin Design going up against JCMK in Group A at 7.30pm. The second game will see D'Sunlit and Street Roc go head-to-head in the same group at 9pm. Held annually in conjunction with the birthday celebrations of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Easyway clinched the tournament - which was called the Mum Bakery Cup last year - for the third time in five years after defeating Fuzhou Shiyyi Associate 89-77 in last year's final.
