SHOOTING Stars Brunei Basketball yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MVP Basketball Academy from Malaysia. Signing on behalf of Shooting Stars was founder Kenneth Han and signing on behalf of MVP Basketball Academy was its director, Wong Wing Wei. Also present to witness the signing ceremony at Fitness Zone Kiulap was Wu Chun, the Managing Director of Fitness Zone. The main objective of the MoU is to get the MVP Basketball Academy to help Shooting Stars with their development of local coaches, with the ultimate goal of improving the sport. The agreement will see Shooting Stars collaborate with Tan Chee Wan, an experienced coach and a former Malaysian national basketball player from the MVP Basketball Academy. 'We have a number of programmes lined up for the local coaches in the near future,' said Han in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday. 'Coach Tan (Chee Wan) are planning to get the coaches to join 'elite' coaching camps in Malaysia sometime in September, adding they currently we have 12 local coaches in the programme,' added Han. Tan, who holds an International Olympic Coaching Certificate, believes that Brunei should give focus more on grassroots and produce more local coaches for the development of the sport. 'We must start somewhere And the best way is too start at the grassroots level,' said Tan. 'To train the kids we must have coaches, so we need to work closely with Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) in this matter. I hope that more and more people would step up to take the role of coaching,' he added. SSBN is a youth basketball grassroots movement created and developed by Han, a former national basketball player who aims to ignite passion for basketball and elevate the sport's status in the country. SSBN holds multiple weekly basketball development programmes for children. Their latest programme was the School Holiday Basketball Camp held at the International School Brunei (ISB) in Sungai Akar in March. Established last year, Shooting Stars Brunei Basketball's vision is to allow children the opportunity to engage in physical activity and for them to build confidence in a fun and encouraging environment.
