Regular Season Round 16: Al Ahly - Al Ittihad 87-108
Date: January 17, 2022
The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Jeddah: Al Ittihad (#4) and Al Ahly (#8). Al Ahly was smashed at home by 21 points 87-108 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Al Ahly. Al Ittihad made 20-of-25 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Nigerian-American power forward Maxie Esho (206-91, college: UMass) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 29 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists. Tunisian point guard Omar Abada (189-93) contributed with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 6 rebounds, 16 assists and 4 steals for the winners. Four Al Ittihad players scored in double figures. Al Ittihad's coach Mohamed Kardani felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward Jordan Washington (203-93, college: Iona, agency: Interperformances) replied with a double-double by scoring 45 points (!!!) and 14 rebounds and the former international Ali Shubayli (190-96) added 25 points and 14 rebounds in the effort for Al Ahly. Al Ittihad (13-3) have an impressive six-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place. Al Ahly at the other side dropped to the ninth position with ten games lost. Al Ittihad are looking forward to face Al Nahda (#10) in Al Khobar in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Al Ahly will play on the road against the league's second-placed Al Nasr in Riyadh and is hoping to prove to their fans that the loss was just an accident.
