Regular Season Round 14: Gifu - Yamaguchi 78-86

There was a small surprise when eleventh ranked Yamaguchi (5-8) beat on the road 9th ranked Gifu (6-9) 86-78 on Saturday. Strangely Gifu outrebounded Yamaguchi 47-31 including a 36-24 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. American players dominated also this game. Center Nicholas Evans (210-88, college: S.Indiana) notched a double-double by scoring 25 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort and forward Robert Sampson (203-92, college: Georgia Tech) supported him with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Sampson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Yamaguchi players scored in double figures. Yamaguchi's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even a double-double of 14 points and 19 rebounds by center Jayce Johnson (213-97, college: Marquette) did not help to save the game for Gifu. Forward Jerrell Wright (204-91, college: La Salle) added 20 points and 14 rebounds for the hosts. Newly promoted Yamaguchi maintains eleventh position with 5-8 record. Loser Gifu keeps the ninth place with nine games lost. Yamaguchi will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Gifu will play again against Yamaguchi (#11) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
