The basketball team of the Department of Accounting & Information Systems of Dhaka University started four years ago in 2003. Its mission was finally accomplished on 9th June, 2007 when the AIS Basketball Team became the unbeaten champions of the Inter Department Basketball Competition 2007 by defeating the Economics Department 65-60 and was crowned the new ruler of basketball in Dhaka University. Defeating Economics in the final triggered a sweet revenge as the AIS team was beaten by the same team in the previous competition by the margin of a single point.
The team led by Biplob Barua broke the scoring record twice on its journey to the top. As the team was firing with its every cylinder, it was beyond imagination for any team to take it down. With the ever so majestic Biplob, ever aggressive Arefin, imposing Rintu, hard-working Arghya, classy Sunny, hard to conquer Ezaz, assiduous Shimul, nimble-footed Mamun, never giving up Saber, conscientious Omi, dedicated managers Rony and Dino, intelligent game teacher Amirus Salat and with the support of the whole Department behind it, it was about time that the team claimed what it deserved since its first appearance in the basketball arena. Biplob Barua was adjudged the Most Valuable Player and Best Scorer in the tournament, a feat that had never been achieved before.
The AIS team first participated in the departmental basketball competition back in 2004 and became runner-up in its first outing. Since then it has been participating in this tournament and always has been a force to reckon with. But unfortunately each and every time until this year, it missed its chances by a whisker. In 2005, it became a defeated quarter finalist and in 2006, it became third thrashing IBA in its last match while losing to the eventual champions -Economics.
As a recognition of its superiority, three players of this team, Biplob, Arefin and Ezaz got selected for the DU Basketball Team and Biplob got selected as the University Team captain. In the years to come, it is widely expected that the AIS team will continue to rule and defend its kingdom.
