NUWAIDRAT defeated Al Hala 67-65 in the semi-final to qualify for the final of the Khalifa bin Salman Basketball Cup Championship, held last night at Khalifa Sports City Hall. The quarters scores were as follows: 20-17 (Al Hala), 19-10 (Al Hala), 21-13 (Nuwaidrat), 19-13 (Nuwaidrat). It was the third clash between the two teams in the best-of-three semi-final series, with Al Hala winning the first game 76-75, before Nuwaidrat levelled it with a 59-50 victory in the second match. Nuwaidrat qualified for the final of the cup competition for the second time in their history, after they already qualified once nine seasons ago although they lost to Manama in the final. Fans in the hall had expected that Al Hala will win the game after they led 39-27 going into the half-time, thanks to excellent performance by their American professional star Loren Woods who took care of the rebounds along with teammates Hassan Gerashi and Ahmed Jamal who both set some fine three-point shots. However, Nuwaidrat came back too hot in both third and fourth quarters, thanks to the great reading and notes by team's Serbian coach Dragan Vascanin who set a fine defensive tactics which stopped Al Hala key players. Shining brightest for Nuwaidrat were Serbian giant Mile Ilic (215-C-84) who scored a total of 23 points, with 18 rebounds and two three-point shots, along with Hussain Hassan (178-G) and Mohammed Butti who each scored 12 points. For Al Hala, Loren Woods (218-C-78, college: Arizona) was the best scorer with 19 points, along with Ahmed Jamal who finished with 18 points that included four three-point shots, and Hassan Gerashi who had 13 points. Nuwaidrat now qualified for the final of the most precious cup Khalifa bin Salman Basketball Cup Championship, and will take on Muharraq in a match scheduled for February 2 at the Khalifa Sports City Hall. In the press conference, Nuwaidrat coach Dragan Vascanin said that qualify for the final of this tournament came after a hard team work of all players and members of technical and administration team. He noted that winning such a precious cup title will be like a dream come true, specially that it will be the first title ever for Nuwaidrat's history in men's basketball. He praised his players' performances, saying that the team played well as he is now looking forward to play better in the final against Muharraq who are considered as one of the strongest teams in Bahrain.
