and China will find out the winner of Asia Championship
Saturday was the semifinal game for 4 teams as well as the day for the
Play-offs. India advanced to Level I for the next Championship, while
Malaysia will have to start from Level II. Thailand defended the place
in Level I over Hong Kong. The semifinals brought two teams that will
face each other in the Final. China and Korea will meet tomorrow in the
last game of the Championship. Chinese Taipei and Japan will struggle
for the third spot.
Thailand celebrated 71:41, the second and the last win in the
Championship and saved the place in Level I for the next Championship.
Hong Kong meanwhile lost for the second time and stayed in Level II.
Thailand was led 16 points from Naruemol. Nantana ended up with 13
points and 7 rebounds, while Roong-Aroon posted 12 points and 8
rebounds.
Yau Ka Wai (-78) finished with 11 points in the losing effort.
India qualified to Level I of the next Championship. In the Play-off
game over Malaysia, India celebrated 86:68 win.
Geethu Anna Jose (185-C-85) was unstoppable in this game leading the
winners with 47 points and 12 rebounds.
Korea earned the only Olympic qualifying berth available from this
Championship. With 22:13 in the third quarter the hosts of the
tournament won over Chinese Taipei 80:70.
Beon Yeon Ha (182-F-80) led the winners to the Final with 19 points.
Park collected 16 points and made 10 rebounds, while Jin and Jung added
11. Chiang top-scored for Chinese Taipei with 20 points.
In the second semifinal game China beat Japan 74:62. A 28:14 benefit in
the third quarter allowed them not to worry about the rest of the game.
Ma Zheng Yu (183-F-83) paced the winners with 21 points.
Ryoko Utsumi (175-G-85) led Japan with 20, while Yuko Oga added 10.
So, tomorrow Chinese Taipei and Japan will struggle for the bronze of
the Championship. The Final game between Korea and China is tomorrow at
6 p.m.

and semifinal time
As the Preliminary round is over, 4 best teams have qualified to the
semifinal of Fiba Asia Championship for Women. Four other teams made up
the Play-off and will find out 2 teams that will stay in Level I in the
next Championship.
Let us start with the semifinals. The hosts of the Fiba Asia
Championship for Women will meet Chinese Taipei in the semifinal game
that will start at 16:00 local time. Both teams met each other in Day 2
of the Group A. That time Korea overcame Chinese Taipei 74:65. The
winner ended up with 5-0, while the latter as 4th with 2-3 record.
Japan and China will meet each other in the semifinal game of the Fiba
Asia Championship for Women right after the first semifinal. The second
and the third teams of the group A will find out the finalist of the
Championship. Japan finished the Preliminary Round with 4-1 record. The
team lost only one game to the winner of the group and the host country,
Korea. In the game between each other Japan upset China 72:65 in the
Preliminary Round.
India and Malaysia will face each other in the Play-off game. India won
all the games in Group B and finished with 5-0 record. Meanwhile
Malaysia lost all the games in Group B. The question however still
opened of whether Malaysia will get the first win or India stays
unbeaten and stay in Level I for the next Championship.
Hong Kong and Thailand will start the game Day tomorrow. They will meet
each other in the Qualifying Round at 12:00 for one ticket to level I in
the next Championship.

Round is over
Day 5 was the last for the teams in Group A and B. The last day results
did not bring any sensations, however made some changes in the
standings. Korea and India won their groups and stay the only unbeaten
teams.
Korea celebrated the win in the Preliminary Round of Group A. In the
last day of it the hosts of the Championship overcame China 83:80.
Jung Sun Min led the winners with 27 points. Beon Yeon-Ha added 22,
while Park Jung Eun had 14. China was led by 23 points from Zhang Han
Ian and 17 from
Wang Xiao Li (190-F-82). China finishes group A on the third spot
with 3-2.
India demolished Sri Lanka 105:56 to finish on top of Group B. India
rested center
Geethu Anna Jose (185-C-85), who anyway topscored the game. She
poured in 29 points, while Divya Singh added 16. Japan smashed Malaysia
117:32 and finished second in group A.
Yumi Iwamura (168-G-81) led the winners with 22 points, Chan Ying
Chee scored 9 in defeat.
Chinese Taipei cantered through to beat Thailand. The winner finished
the Group A on the fourth spot with 2-3, while Thailand is fifth with
1-4.
center Asian nation Uzbekistan signed off their campaign in Level II
beating Vietnam. Uzbekistan overcame Vietnam 89:50 to end on the third
with 3-2.
Guzal Burieva (-89) paced the way with 22 points, Irina Averyanova
netted 20. Nguyen Thi Le Van top-scored for the visitors with 27 points.
Hong Kong satisfied with 69:60 win over Singapore to grab the second
place in Group B.
Cho Kit Ying (-81) poured in 21 points and Lo scored 13, while
Zhou Lei (187-C-87) was the best in defeat with 14 points and 13
rebounds.
The Qualifying Round will start on June 9th.

wins Preliminary Round in Group A
Korea-China 83:80
Korea celebrated the win in the Preliminary Round of Group A. In the
last day of it the hosts of the Championship overcame China 83:80.
Having 10 points deficit after the first half, Korea however was caught
by China in the end. The support of the home team was more than
effective as Korea stayed unbeaten and finished Group with 5-0 record. Jung
Sun Min (186-C-74) led the winners with 27 points.
Beon Yeon Ha (182-F-80) Yeon-Ha added 22, while
Park
Jung Sun Min (180-F-77) had 14. China was led by 23 points from
Zhang Han Lan and 17 from
Wang Xiao Li (190-F-82). China finishes group A on the third spot
with 3-2.
Korea did not have any difficulties in the first quarter. Supported well
by the fans, the hosts won the opening quarter 29:21. The most
troublesome player for China was
Jung Sun Min who poured in basket after basket. Korea won the second
quarter as well to increase at 46:36 at the half.
In the second half the visitors started to reduce the gap. China tied
the score at 80 all but the way Korea handled that end-game situation
made the difference. Chinese coach Su Fengwu thought that Korea won the
battle more in the mind than on the court. A 83:80 win brought Korea the
fifth straight win and the first spot in Group A.

stays without wins in Korea
Malaysia finished the Preliminary Round in FIBA Asia Championship for
Women in Korea without a win. The team did not have any brilliant tasks
for the tournament, however could win one game. In the fourth day of the
Championship, Malaysia was upset by Thailand 74:75.
In the first game Malaysia lost to Chinese Taipei 54:107. Liu Yi Chun
led the winners with 27 points, Lin Mei Hui ended up with 14.
Woon Yuen Teo (163-G-85) and Chan Ying Chee collected 10 points in
defeat.
In the second game China did not have much difficulties cruising past
Malaysia 109:57. Tan See Wah, the Head coach of Malaysian team was not
very upset as he thinks that every match here is a learning experience.
With 26:12 in the opening quarter China increased to a higher lead in
the end. Zhang Han Lan paced the winners with 18 points. Ma Zheng Yu,
Wei Wei and Mo Li posted 13 points each.
Suik May Kew (171-F-82) May Suik resisted for Malaysia with 22
points.
In Day 3 Malaysia was defeated by the hosts, Korea. Korea did not
worry about the game as they thought about the next one against Japan.
That is why Malaysia stayed even in the opening quarter and lost only
15:20. Korea increased the lead in the second and already had 21 points
deficit at the half. Both squads disappeared for interims with 48:27 for
the hosts. It was not a big deal to control the rest of the game. Kim
Eung-Jun top-scored for the winners with 29 points.
Siao Foong Chow (171-F-76) paced Malaysia with 14 points.
The most important game for Malaysia was in Day 4 when the team met
another winless team-Thailand. Only one points loss did not allow our
team to celebrate the first win. Thailand staved off Malaysia's
remarkable rally to post their maiden victory in Level I on Wednesday.
Roong-Aroon Pungkoksoong and Nantana Charoenrat led the winners with 21
points.
Siao Foong Chow was again on top with 25 points for Malaysia.
Today, in the last day of the Preliminary round Malaysia was upset by
Japan 32:117. Malaysia coach Tan See Wah said that the team knew the
result before the game itself. Malaysia finished Group A with no wins
and 5 losses.

The National team of
Thailand deserved at least a win in FIBA Asia Championship for Women in
Korea. The team made up Group A together with Korea, China, Chinese
Taipei, Malaysia and Japan. A 75:74 win over Malaysia allowed Thai women
to celebrate the only win.
The tournament started with the game against the hosts, Korea. Thailand
was gallant in their efforts.
Nantana Charoenrat (175-G-77) worked hard and deservingly top scored
for her team, as she poured in 15 points in a 47:108 loss.
In Day 2 Thailand was defeated by Japan 104:44. Thailand coach Kim Jae
Wong was rather satisfied about the result as he realized the levels of
the teams. Yuka Watanabe and Yumi Iwamura contributed into the win with
15 points.
Nantana Charoenrat top-scored for Thailand with 16 points.
China cruised over Thailand in Day 3 with 113:47 win. Our team did not
play well, however were preparing for the next game over Malaysia.
Roong-Aroon Pungkoksoong and Naruemoi nailed 10 points for Thailand
over China.
In the most important game for our team probably in the tournament
Thailand escaped with 75:74 win over Malaysia. Thailand staved off
Malaysia's remarkable rally to post their maiden victory in Level I on
Wednesday. Coming against their South East Asian archrivals, Thailand
will now have to play the second finishing team in Level II in the
play-offs.

4 results and stats
Four games out of six had
been finished in FIBA Asia Championship for Women, while two more are
scheduled for the evening. The day brought the key games of the leaders
in Group A and B.
Two games were expected with a great interest today. In Group A Korea
and Japan stayed unbeaten on the top with 3-0 before the game with each
other. Hosts Korea gave crowd a lot to cheer about beating traditional
East Asian rivals Japan in a needle Level I encounter. Korea went on a
20:14 lead in the opening quarter and never looked behind. Sun-Min Jung
led the winners with 20 points. Beon Yeon-Ha nailed 17, while Park Jung
Eun added 12. Korea clinched first in the group and may not care about
the result in the last day of the tournament.
Best two teams of Group B faced each other as well. India celebrated the
fourth straight win and clinched the first place in the group even
though there is one more day remaining. Hong Kong will need a win over
Singapore to take second spot.

tournament defeated Malaysia 97:53. The latter had a good start, but
could not stay tough longer. Kim Eung-Jun top-scored for the winners

Kwe-Ryong finished with 12.

India celebrated the third
win in a row in FIBA Asia Championship for Women. In the third game
India rolled over Uzbekistan 67:63. That was the toughest game so far
for the winners as two previous games were a preparation for the
Play-offs.
Geethu Ann Jose (185-C-85) top-scored with 27 points and leads the
scoring list of the tournament.
Anitha Pauldurai finished with 12, while
Kiranjit Kaur added 10.
Vera Titova (178-F-85) scored 20 points in the losing effort.
India struggled to get past the tallest rivals they have encountered so
far. Tatyana Kildyusheva kept a tight leash on India's prolific centre
Geethu Ann Jose. The latter averages 31.3 points per game so far.
Anyway, India took a lead and started with 19:13 after the first.
Uzbekistan has definitely changed in the second quarter and not only
reduced the score, however managed to grab the lead. The squads finished
the half at 28:33 for Uzbekistan. India caught up the opponents in the
third quarter and stayed calm in the end. The third win for India left
them on the top together with Hong Kong. Uzbekistan is 1-2 in the
standings, but shows great effort and games.

Japan started with two wins
in FIBA Asia Championship for Women. In the opener of the tournament
Japan survived over China, while in the second game Japan overwhelmed
Thailand. The team shares the top position with Korea in Group A.
China had come into this Championship with only one player,
Jia Guang (176-G-80), from the team that won the gold medal at the
2006 Doha Asian Games. The visitors started better and won the opening
quarter over Japan 20:22. The latter took a control in the end of the
game and won 72:65.
Kumiko Yamada (192-F-79) led the winners with 20 points.
Yuko Oga (170-G-82) posted 19, while Ai Mitani added 11. China was
led by
Guan Xin (196-C-87) with 16 points.
In the second game Japan smashed Thailand 104:44. Almost all the 12
players got an equal feel of the court as the coach took the opportunity
to try out a few new game situations. Japan dominated in the court
during the whole game and played its own game. The most troubles
Thailand had in the second quarter when they lost 10:32.

The host team of the Asia
Championship for Women, Korea started with 2 wins in the tournament.
Thailand was smashed in the opener, while the victory over Chinese
Taipei was achieved in the end. Korea shares the top spot with Japan in
Group A with 2-0.
In the opener of the Asian Championship for Women, Korea used the whole
power of the host team and got an easy win over Thailand. The score was
already 32:7 after the first quarter that did not provoke an intrigue in
the end. Korea led the game to 108:47 win and achieved the first win.
Sun Min Jung led the winners with 18 points.

situation, and thus prevailed over a spirited Chinese Taipei. Korea

the opening tip and stayed only 35:37 at the half time, however failed
in the third. Korea advantaged in the end and stayed unbeaten in the
tournament.
