EB-tell us about ur start..when,where and who encouraged you to play?
SN- I started playing basketball at my hometown in Monsif, my parents were very supportive especially that my dad was an x national team volley ball player. I was very young around 11 years old and I used to play with the guys. At the age of 13 I joined Homentmen Antelias club; our team was young and talented.
EB-how do u feel after nominating u as the best point guard in Asia? To whom u give all the credits of what u are today?
SN- It feels great; I am honored to be named the best point guard in Asia. All the credit to those who believe in me i.e. my family, my close ones, teammates, my coaches, FLB management and off course fans who love the way I play.
EB-as we all know, every player has his/her up and downs, what are the downs that touched u the most and gave u a push to stand up again?
SN- Ive had two downs in basketball. The first is when I got injured in 2001 and again the following year in 2002 where I had to undergo two surgeries in my right knee. The love of the game and the passion for getting back on court was the push to get me out of my injury. The pain, the physical therapy, the sleepless nights was all worth it when I stepped back on the court healthy and ready. The second is when my teammate Nayla Alameddine got injured (ACL for a 2nd time in the same knee) last season. When Nayla got injured, as we all know the whole team was affected negatively both technically and morally. What pushed me forward was the challenge of winning, when every other team thought they could beat us without Nayla. Also, the team (coaching staff and players) made a pact to win the championship for Nayla and all the efforts she put for her comeback. Thankfully, we won the title without a single loss.
EB-what is the story behind the jersey #13, and the two nicknames Boo and the none passer?!
SN- I took #13 since I was 13 years old when I started playing in the first division league; also my dad was a professional volleyball player wearing number #13 as well. After that, the number became kind of an obsession. The nickname Boo is because I like the baby bear in Yogi bear and his name is Bubu so my friends started calling me Bubu and now everyone calls me Bu (short for bubu). The nickname non-passer is an inside joke between me and my team mate Tamara Khalil. She teases me with this nickname which reflects the quite opposite of what she truly means. And even though she is a center, she is one of my close competitors in assisting.
EB-have u ever thought of retiring?
SN- Yes, off course I think of retiring. I want to retire at my peak and at the best time but I dont know when I will feel ready to do so.
EB-what is your best moment in your entire career? And the worst?
SN- The best moment in my career was the final seconds in the qualifying game of Asia level A against Thailand. For the first time, we made history. The worst moment in my career is when the doctor informed me that I needed a knee operation.
EB-with whom u get along the most on the court and why?
SN- I get along mostly with Nayla, Nisrine, Sherine and Tamara and all my other teammates as well. This is due to the fact that we have been playing together for more than 6 years and the chemistry between us is excellent. The results speak by themselves.
EB-who do u think will be the next shada nasr ?! any talented young players got ur attention?!
SN- I think Rebecca Akl is a very talented young player and she will be the best player in Lebanon in a couple of years. With her humble attitude, I hope that she will be better than Shada Nasr and I support her all the way.
EB-lots of people criticized your coach Elie Nasr in the past few months. Some of them said that he's not fair, he chose almost all the players from his teams. Others say that in a game he barely gives the chance to the bench, and that it's not right to keep a shooter with 10% average on the court all the game. Others also say that he doesnt give chance to young talented players, and that in some of the games he gave up too early. What are your comments?
SN- It is so easy to criticize in this country. Even when we have good results everyone criticizes. Coach Elie did an excellent job, the way he prepared the team (4 months) before going to India was very professional. We practiced 6 times a week and sometimes 7 times plus 2 to 3 times a week with the fitness trainer in the gym. Coach Elie had a big rotation in many of the games (9 to 10 players sometimes 12). In the end, this is the national team and our target is to win. Additionally, there is no team in the world that plays the 12 players in tight close games. Also, Antranik is the best female basketball team for 7 consecutive years (without a single loss in the Lebanese championship) and each and every player who was selected on the national team deserves to be in her spot as one of the elite 12 players. The question of whether critics accept this fact or not is different and is their problem honestly. As for other technicalities during the game, Elie is the coach, he knows what he is doing and I have blind faith in every decision he and coach Vicken took. I am a player, the captain of this team and I am not in a position to make further comments. I fully support this coaching staff and no one could have accomplished what coach Elie did.
EB-what can u tell us about Emma Eskedjian's issue with the national team? Who should we blame for not letting her participate?
SN- I wish Emma participated with us, it would have been a moral and technical push for the team. Till now, we are not sure what the problem was and whether this problem could be solved or not. To my knowledge, the FIBA (Asian federation) considered Emma as a foreigner (even though she holds the Lebanese passport) since she is not a born Lebanese and we only had the chance to play one foreigner that was Chantelle Anderson.
EB-how much are u 'as lebanese female basketballer' far from being a pro?!
SN- The female basketball league is far from being a pro because there are no sponsors and thus no proper financing. With low budgets, the game becomes a hobby and all the girls pursue other specialties and jobs in order to secure their future.
EB-8 out of 12 from the NT are antranik players ,do u think that Antranik is killing the competition in the women's league, just like what riyadi did in the past few years ?!
SN- To start with its 7 out of 12 . In my opinion, our case is not even compared to riyadis case. What killed the competition in the mens league was considering Vogal as Lebanese. As in our case, Antranik had a far fetched eye to combine talented players with good attitude along with an excellent coaching staff under the same roof (since 7 years ago). The club built on this team and with time the chemistry increased and the team got better (Arab champs 2 years in a row).
EB-Why do u think Nathalie Mamo, the leader of riyadi in the past year, played barely few minutes in asian cup and the francophone games?!
SN- From what I can say as captain of the national team, I am sure it is nothing personal between her and the coaching staff (Elie and Vicken). Other than that, this question should be addressed to them.
EB-what makes u 'ANTRANIK' better than all the division 1 teams? SN- In my opinion, three factors: Team Chemistry (both players and coaching staff), Commitment and great attitude (club, players and coaches), and finally quality and respect for the game.
EB-how do u evaluate eurobasket in covering lebanese league for girl and all events for girl in the area
SN- As everybody knows, EuroBasket is the best website in the world and having coverage of the Lebanese women's league through you Maarouf is a big plus for Lebanese basketball. So thank you very much for your efforts, keep it up
