Besides Chen, Zhou Peng and Xie Libin show up often and are generally considered to be China's next best performers in this age group. I would like to thank Kings of https://forums.interbasket.net for this information. The 16-point margin against Korea was the closest win for China in this tournament. Yesterday South Korea beat Chinese Taipei 72-66 in the semi-finals. I now have results for all the placement games. The South Koreans never gave up in this game, keeping the score respectable. At this level the scores only become unrespectable when the losing team mentally gives up. If China keeps this team together for the World Junior Championship next year, its showing will be very respectable. However Chen Jianghua, and perhaps even Xie Libin and Zhou Peng, might possibly play instead for the senior team at the senior Asian Championship which is likely to serve as a tryout for spots on the 2008 Olympic team. China held a narrow 25-22 lead after the first quarter. It started slowly against South Korea just as it started slowly against Chinese Taipei in its second-round game. China started to play better in the second quarter and held a 48-38 lead at the half. China widened its margin to 76-61 after three quarters. This Chinese junior team is beginning to realize the potential that China has to become a world power in basketball. We are now beginning to see the quickness, body control and jumping ability of China's guards as China learns to play with the intensity and physicality that the game is played internationally. One day Chinese players, as a group, will be every bit as talented as American players 'if not better. That's what Chinese Basketball Theory predicts. China is still a significant way from fulfilling its ultimate basketball potential. But the play of this junior team, with guards like Chen Jianghua, Han Shuo, Xie Libin and Ma Yansong, marks a significant step in this direction. Note that Liu Xiaoyu, who was cited by nbadraft.net as a star at the American Nike Camp this summrer, failed to make the final cut for this team. The success of the other Chinese guards in this tournament shows why. In the third place game, Lebanon, rebounding from yesterday's 53-point loss to China, defeated Chinese Taipei 83-60. China, South Korea and Lebanon qualify for next year's World Under-19 Championship in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. FIBA Asia has finally posted all results on its website but still has no box scores or statistics for individual players. How can basketball in Asia be promoted properly if FIBA-Asia is so lax in giving us information on Asian players. The NBA, and European teams, might be interested in Asian players if they were allowed to have more exposure. 1. China 2. South Korea 3. Lebanon 4. Chinese Taipei 5. Kazakhstan 6. Japan 7. Iran 8. Still, it's the best finish for Taiwan in Asian Junior Men since 2000, when it won bronze. Taiwan lost to South Korea 72-66 in the semifinal game Friday night. China beat Lebanon 119-66 in the other semi. China Crushes Lebanon 129-76 in Semifinal of Asian U-18 - Sep. 8, 2006 China defeated Lebanon today 129-76 in its Semifinal Game of the Asian Under-18 Tournament. China led 33-15 after one quarter, 60-31 at the half and 96-53 after three quarters. China had a 53-point margin of victory against a program that, over the last few years, has been overall the best of Middle Eastern nations and whose senior team edged France 74-73 in the recent world championship. In earlier news, Chen Jianghua scored 24 points in China's 87-54 victory over Kuwait in the second round on Wednesday. Semi-Finals September 8, China 129-76 Lebanon (33-15,27-16,36-22,33-23) China Defeats Kuwait -- China - Lebanon, South Korea-Chinese Tapei Meet in Semifinals - Sep. 7, 2006 China finished 3-0 in Group I in the Asian Under-18 championship and will meet Lebanon tomorrow in a semi-final game. The other semifinal will be between South Korea and Chinese Taipei. East Asian teams earned three of four semifinal slots, with only Lebanon earning a place for Middle Eastern teams. Lebanon (2-1) earned the right to meet China with a 100-65 blowout of Japan (1-2). South Korea finsished 3-0 in Group II with an 85-79 victory over Iran (0-3). Chinese Taipei (2-1) earned its place in the semifinals by edging Kazakhstan (1-2) and its star 209 cm center Anton Ponomarev (209-C-88) 79-75. Taiwan will meet South Korea in the semifinal Friday. Win or lose, this is going to be Taiwan's best finish in Asia Junior Men since 2000, when it finished for bronze. Taiwan was 6th- and 5th-place in 2002 and 2004. The best finish is six years is not the only goal for Taiwan Junior. It will try to beat South Korea for one of three seeds for Asia in the World U-19 Men's Championship, which will be played in Vancouver, Canada next year. Height disadvantage didn't stop Taiwanese from fighting for a semifinal berth, as it led from start to finish with small margins, leading 40-35 at the half. Chang Tsun-hsien and Lo Yu-chun had 19 points each, while center Tsai Jun-ming scored 14 points. China will meet Lebanon in the other semifinal game. Second Round, Second Game Results in U-18 - Sep. 6, 2006 Yang Qin (196 cm G 1988) replaced young Meng Duo on China's Under-18 team. Yang Qin, who had a horrible shooting average in the Albert Schweitzer tourney, made the team selected to go to Atlanta at the Asian Adidas Camp. I am having problems with my computer and intend to take it to be fixed early next week, after the Asian Under-18 tournament is over. Right now I do not have access to email so I apologize for any lack of response. Yesterday's results: Group I China (2-0) 101 Chinese Taipei (1-1) 57 Kazakhstan (1-1) 96 Kuwait (0-2) 55 Group II South Korea (2-0) 100 Lebanon (1-1) 92 Japan (1-1) 99 Iran (0-2) 75 Consolation Rounds Class III Syria (2-0) 84 Malaysia (1-1) 65 Kyrgystan (1-1) 81 Singapore (0-2) 64 Class IV Yemen(2-0) 95 Thailand (1-1) 65 India (1-1) 78 Chinese Hong Kong 65 Below is a list of Chen Jianghua's scoring statistics for the first five games of the tourney. Chen is playing this tournament right after his participation in the World Basketball Championship. Preliminary Round China 105-41 Kyrgyzstan,11Points China 124-94 Japan,24Points China 138-44 Chinese Hongkong,15Points Quarter-Final Round China 87-66 Kazakhstan,25Points China 101-57 Chinese Taipei,15Points Taiwan U-18's roadblock to semi - Kazakhstan - Sep. 5, 2006 Taiwan men's U-18 will face Kazakhstan in the final second round game Wednesday night to vie for a seed in the Asian U-18 semifinals in Urumqi, China, after splitting its last two games. Taiwan was routed by China, 101-57, as expected Tuesday with Chang Tsun-shien again leading the team in scoring with 21 points. The team beat Kuwait 107-76 Monday. A victory over Kazakhstan will put Taiwan in the second place in Group I, behind China. But it will not be easy. Half of Kazak players played in this year's Jones Cup and showed enormous potential. The leader of the pack is 6-10 forward/center Anton Ponomarev (209-C-88), who averaged 20.1 points (#3) and 9.1 rebounds (#2) in the Jones Cup. Taiwan head coach Tien Ben-yu made clear Panomarev will be the primary concern for Taiwanese defense. Dmitriy Klimov is another player to keep an eye on. Injured Chen Yao-ting and Lin Yi-fu are questionable for the game, which hurt the Taiwanese because both have been starters. Taiwan is expected to counter Kazakhstan, who has the height advantage, with zone defense, Tien said. China Swamps Chinese Taipei In Asian Junior Championship - Sep. 5, 2006 China defeated Chinese Taipei tonight 101-57 to clinch a spot in the Asian-Under 18 Tournament semi-finals. I would like to thank Kings of https://forums.interbasket.net for the following statistics on the preliminary round and second round games. Note that Yang Qin, a 196 cm guard who played in the Albert Schweitzer Tourney, has been added to the Chinese roster. I do not know whom he has replaced. Fiba Asia has now posted first round results in a pdf file on its website. But there are still no box scores and their website is way behind the bloggers. Also they list the score of the China-Kyrgystan game as being 105-42 and I tend to trust my two bloggers on the score more than I trust Fiba Asia. In the other Group I game, Chinese Taipei defeated Kuwait 106-76. China will face undefeated Chinese Taipei tomorrow. China thrashed Hong Kong yesterday 138-44 to clinch first place in Group A. Chen Jianghua scored 15 points and Xie Libin scored 12. China did not let the starters play too many minutes, and it now realizes that it must pace itself in these kind of tournaments. A total of 8 players were in double figures in scoring. In the 2nd round of round-robin, China is in Group I with Chinese Taipei, Kuwait and Kazakhstan. Group II is Japan, South Korea, Lebanon and Iran.
